American-born Canada soccer coach Jesse Marsch takes aim at home country before USMNT friendly

Jesse Marsch was born in Wisconsin, played professionally in MLS and represented the United States as both a player and an assistant coach before landing premier managerial jobs in Europe and eventually taking over the Canadian national team in 2024.

The case could quite easily be made that Marsch owes a significant amount of his career to being born in the United States. After all, he played collegiately at Princeton under coach Bob Bradley before being drafted by D.C. United in 1996. When Marsch retired from playing, Bradley happened to be the coach of the U.S. men’s national team. Marsch joined his staff, and his coaching career was off and running.

Marsch lived the American soccer dream in a time when one didn’t even really exist, but seems to have lost any form of appreciation for that. Who knows, he may have never had any to begin with.

Marsch’s Canadian side is set to take on the U.S. men’s national team in a friendly on Tuesday in Saint Paul, Minnesota. In the days leading up to the match, the 52-year-old chose to stoke the fires by explaining that his home country is nothing but a propaganda-infused nation hated by the rest of the world.

“We, as Americans, have been inundated with propaganda since we were young,” Marsch told The Guardian in a piece published on Oct. 4. “We’re the No 1 country in the world, we deserve everything, we dominate everything, No 1 in every aspect of life. This is what we’ve been told. So, when things happen and we don’t feel like we’re in control of it … we feel like we deserve to be treated differently because we’re Americans.

That is one of the things that infuriates the rest of the world about Americans. And Americans don’t know that if they don’t ever leave the country.”

Talking about America as if it’s North Korea and insinuating that Americans who never travel the world have no sense of reality is bold, but something Marsch clearly feels strongly about, considering he delivered the comments after being asked about U.S. forward Folarin Balogun having a red card rescinded during this summer’s World Cup.

“So what I feel when the Balogun ruling happens is that would never happen in any other country in the world, and this is why everyone around the world hates America,” Marsch continued.

“That was proven to be so. The U.S. had had a good World Cup, was doing well. All that switched in one moment. But do I think that that’s about corruption and unfairness? The problem is, football is inundated with this kind of stuff.”

Marsch’s claims of the sport of soccer as a whole being filled with corruption ring true, but the rest of his thoughts feel deeply rooted in the current political climate in the United States.

That’s because they are.

Speaking with reporters on Monday to preview the friendly, Marsch was asked if he feels more American or Canadian. After admitting he was American but “honored and really proud” to be Canada’s national team coach, he stated that he believes he has a “unique perspective” on things.

His unique perspective seems to only offer a negative outlook on his home country.

“Here we are now, the big talk in America is Lake Ontario, Lake America, this kind of crap,” Marsch said, referring to President Donald Trump’s executive order for renaming Lake Ontario.

“There’s a uniqueness to Canada in terms of how truly multiethnic this country has become,” Marsch continued. “You can see that Canada is not just a North American country anymore, you know? That bodes well for our sport and for the makeup of our team, the makeup of our fans.”

Despite Canada’s open border policies and Marsch’s outlook on the country, Canada is, in fact, just another North American country.

Marsch is 17-14-7 as Canada’s manager, but if he keeps bad-mouthing his new country’s neighbor to the south and pushing liberal talking points during press conferences, his mediocre record will be overlooked for quite some time.
