House Republicans are probing New Jersey’s government after Gov. Mikie Sherrill admitted to more than 6,000 noncitizens being added to Garden State voter rolls in 2023 and 2024.

The GOP has been hammering New Jersey Democrats ever since Sherrill announced that 6,600 noncitizens were mistakenly added to the state’s voter rolls during that two-year period, before she was in office, as election integrity sits as a key focal point ahead of the November midterms.

Judiciary Committee Chairman Jim Jordan, R-Ohio, and Committee on House Administration Chairman Bryan Steil, R-Wis., wrote to New Jersey Lt. Governor Dale Caldwell on Monday for more information on the state’s compliance with federal laws surrounding elections.

HOUSE REPUBLICANS CONFRONT NJ GOVERNOR OVER 6,600 NONCITIZENS REGISTERED TO VOTE IN ALLEGED SOFTWARE FAILURE

“During a July 21, 2026, press conference, New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill announced that approximately 6,600 noncitizens were registered to vote between June 2023 and June 2024 because the state Motor Vehicle Commission (MVC) sent the information of noncitizens who accurately marked they were not citizens to the Department of State’s Division of Elections and the noncitizens were then registered to vote,” Jordan and Steil wrote.

“According to Governor Sherrill, around 400 of these individuals successfully voted in elections since 2023. We write to express our serious concerns with New Jersey apparently adding thousands of noncitizens to its voter rolls and to request information from the New Jersey Department of State about its compliance with applicable federal voting laws.”

Sherrill attributed the mistake to a “serious software error in New Jersey’s Motor Vehicle system.”

But it’s unclear how many noncitizens have been able to register to vote beyond those two years, thanks to New Jersey motor voter laws that make it easy for people to go through that process during a visit to their local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) location.

The revelations appear to undercut Democrats’ assurances that noncitizens are not voting in U.S. elections, while feeding into Republicans’ push for stricter federal standards at the ballot box. To date, however, there has been no evidence that shows noncitizens have swayed the outcome of any federal election.

“The vendor, IDEMIA, that provided the software that Governor Sherrill alleges caused the noncitizens to be registered refuted Governor Sherrill’s claims, stating that New Jersey agencies were to blame,” the Republicans’ letter said. “According to IDEMIA, the registration of noncitizens appears to have ended only when MVC asked IDEMIA to change certain settings in June 2024, but the noncitizens were not removed from the voter rolls and the issue was not publicly disclosed until now.”

FEDERAL JUDGE BLOCKS DOJ ACCESS TO NJ VOTER ROLLS AMID STATEWIDE CONTROVERSY

“If the New Jersey government had access to accurate information about the citizenship status of the noncitizens who were registered to vote and were aware of the situation in June 2024, this raises additional questions about Governor Sherrill’s decision to blame IDEMIA, to not remove the noncitizens from the voter rolls, and to not disclose the issue to the public.”

They pointed out that Caldwell, as the top elections official in the state, is “uniquely positioned” to help with House Republicans’ investigation.

The committees are now seeking any and all information related to New Jersey’s compliance with the Help America Vote Act of 2002 (HAVA), the National Voter Registration Act of 1993 (NVRA), and the Civil Rights Act of 1960 (CRA).

“HAVA governs the rules, maintenance, and technical coordination required for statewide voter registration databases. The NVRA mandates that state motor agencies serve as voter registration portals with requisite compliance protocols to maintain accurate and up-to-date voter rolls. The CRA requires states to maintain voter records and empowers the U.S. Department of Justice to vet voter rolls by cross-referencing lists to identify improper registrations,” the letter said.

They’re also looking for any documents pertaining to how New Jersey vets its voter rolls for eligibility as well as evidence of a “lack of cooperation” with the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) in its aim to verify the citizenship status of each state’s voters.

The letter is also signed by Rep. Jeff Van Drew, R-N.J., and Rep. Laurel Lee, R-Fla., both of whom chair relevant subcommittees on the matter.

They are requesting that New Jersey’s government provide the documents by no later than August 17.

Fox News Digital reached out to Sherrill’s office for comment.
