Buck has introduced two new modern folders into its catalog for the spring. The Ferrox and Nomad share materials and have similar dimensions, offering users two different options for a sub-$100 Buck user.

698 Ferrox

We won’t pretend to understand Buck’s – or indeed, any other knife company’s – numbering system, but we don’t have to do to be able to appreciate the lines of the Ferrox itself. This is Buck’s version of the modified wharncliffe, a very popular profile for a modern EDC. At 3.25 inches, it is sized to handle what can be safely called the “standard” everyday cutting chore menu: breaking down boxes, cutting tape, slicing food, things like that.

In addition to its useful size and cutting geometry, the Ferrox comes with D2 semi-stainless blade steel. While we’re detecting a slight shift in budget knife steels, D2 steel has been the reigning champ in that realm for years now, and for good reason: for anybody who can take its one notable downside, its lack of full stainlessness, in stride, it really does punch above its weight in pure performance. The Ferrox’s blade is secured with a crossbar lock.

700 Nomad

The Ferrox’s stablemate the Nomad offers a blade with an identical length, but with a different, equally utile profile: the drop point. There are years’ worth of forum archives proving that the discussion of blade shape preference will never be settled once and for all, and that’s a good thing: the choice between one shape and another can be less about performance metrics and more about taste, preference, sheer whim – especially when it comes to an everyday user like the Nomad.

As with the Ferrox, the Nomad has a simple handle made from aluminum scales. There is also, once again, a crossbar lock within the handle and a reversible, deep carry pocket clip on the outside.

The Ferrox and Nomad are available now.
