Braxx to Basics: Sencut Creates New Slipjoint

Sencut is fixing to add a slipjoint to their catalog with an incoming model called the Braxx. The Braxx packs in a robust blade shape at a solid length for most day-to-day cutting chores.

Modern slipjoint design can be just as various as that of locking folders – we’ve seen tantos, reverse tantos, trailing points, wharnies both standard and modified – heck, we’ve probably seen a non-locking karambit somewhere along the line. We live in an age where production knives are releasing so quickly in such profusion that all knife formats are benefitting in terms of sheer variety.

In addition to the synthetic scale options, there’s a wood-handled model.

That being said, the Sencut design team opted for the good ol’ fashioned drop point. It’s an assertive, stylized version of the form, too – and, at 3.12 inches in length, it has the necessary wingspan for a lot of chores both big and small. The blade steel is D2, so performance in its price class (sub-$50 MSRP) will be near the top in terms of edge retention and overall toughness. The only thing one needs to worry about with D2 is its comparative lack of rust resistance – but it is a “semi-stainless,” so it should still do better in that department than the traditional carbon steel families.

On the handle we have a simple arc shape enlivened by a flared, angle-cut pommel and some asymmetrical chamfering on the scales – and yes, these are scales, not covers, as they can be removed with Torx screws; nothing is pinned together here. The Braxx’s pocket clip is reversible, and there must be some significant steel liners under the hood because the weight is a solid (but not onerous) 3.55 oz. Scale options include G-10, canvas Micarta, and guibourtia wood.

The Braxx is shipping in the next two weeks.
